I could never grasp any sort of skills from doing art classes (not even a private one). Of course, art classes are what got me more interested in the other traditional forms of art...but they never helped me style-wise.
Heck, I have never met another artist who's style didn't look like anime in real life. 'xD
I just had to learn how to do all that stuff by myself.
Another tip I just have to mention; It also helps to draw things you don't normally draw to help you get some experience in drawing the unusual. For me, that's be like drawing armor, weaponry, vehicles, or insects.
